How to Care for Your Cashmere: The Complete Guide
Cashmere is one of the most luxurious natural fibres in the world, and with proper care, your cashmere pieces will last for years – even decades. Here's everything you need to know about keeping your cashmere looking and feeling its best.
Why Cashmere Needs Special Care
Cashmere comes from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats, making it incredibly fine and delicate. Unlike regular wool, these fibres are much softer and more prone to pilling if not cared for properly. The good news? A little attention goes a long way.
Washing Your Cashmere
Hand washing is best. Fill a basin with lukewarm water (never hot) and add a small amount of gentle detergent or specialist cashmere wash. Submerge your garment and gently swirl – don't rub, twist or wring.
Rinse thoroughly in clean lukewarm water until all soap is removed. Gently press out excess water by laying flat on a clean towel and rolling up.
Drying
Always dry cashmere flat on a clean, dry towel away from direct heat or sunlight. Reshape while damp and leave to air dry naturally. Never hang cashmere – it will stretch out of shape.
Dealing with Pilling
Pilling is natural with cashmere, especially in high-friction areas. Use a cashmere comb or fabric shaver to gently remove pills. Regular de-pilling actually helps your cashmere look better over time.
Storage Tips
- Always store clean – moths are attracted to body oils and food residue
- Fold rather than hang to prevent stretching
- Use cedar balls or lavender sachets as natural moth deterrents
- Store in breathable cotton bags, not plastic
